NOW ACCEPTING NEW ENROLLMENTS! Parenting is one of our biggest and most important jobs and yet there is very little “training” to become a parent. We are supposed to just know how!

Parent-Child Connections program is for parents of 6-12 year olds and provides on-going support and education. The group focuses on the situations that each parent deals with on a daily basis and addresses those present needs in the context of connective parenting. Daily challenged get how-to attention with a foundation of trust, connection, and balance so that a parent's expectations, school related issues, sibling and peer conflicts, the parents' needs in balance with the child's, building self confidence and respect all through connective communication and problem solving. Criticism, punishment and blame break down connection and send messages to children we least intend. Problem solving focuses on the balance of needs within the family and holds children accountable for their behavior and finding solutions.

This year The River Center broke the one million dollar mark in tax returns ($1,085,377 to be exact) which is a first for the free program that is in its fifth year.  Larry Schwartz, along with 24 volunteers (12 of which are IRS certified) provided the local community with free tax preparation, this year aiding almost 700 clients.  The programs aim is to help residents who could not afford to have their taxes done, but most likely need the assistance.  Many clients who come to The River Center for the tax preparation program are low income families for whom these tax returns make a world of difference in their living situation.  This also means that paying someone to file for them is too far out of reach, but filing alone usually means missing tax credits.  For example many low income families qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, but most aren’t aware that that credit even exists.

The River Center aids the largest number of residents out of all of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites in the state. Surpassing the million dollar milestone this year only makes the service that much more successful-and enjoyable for the volunteers.

PETERBOROUGH — Larry Schwartz and his crew of 12 volunteers don’t like to see anyone get back less than they’re entitled to when they file an income tax return. And they hate to see someone pay too much to get those tax returns prepared..
